Commonly used gear materials include quenched and tempered steel, quenched steel, carburized quenched steel and nitrided steel. The strength of cast steel is slightly lower than that of forged steel, and it is often used for gears with larger sizes; gray cast iron has poor mechanical properties and can be used in light-load open gear transmission; ductile iron can partially replace steel to make gears; plastic gears are mostly used Where light load and low noise are required, steel gears with good thermal conductivity are generally used for matching gears. After years of development in the gear industry, the future gears are moving closer to heavy load, high speed, high precision and efficiency, and put forward higher requirements for the size, weight, service life and cost performance of gear products.

Rack and pinion generally include gear teeth, tooth grooves, end faces, normal faces, tooth top circle, tooth root circle, base circle, and indexing circle. The gear teeth are referred to as teeth. They are each protruding part of the gear for meshing. These protruding parts are generally arranged in a radial shape. The gear teeth on the paired gear contact each other to make the gear continue to mesh. The tooth groove is the space between two adjacent teeth on the gear; the end face is a plane on the cylindrical gear or cylindrical worm, perpendicular to the axis of the gear or worm. The end face is the plane at both ends of the gear, and the normal plane refers to the plane perpendicular to the tooth line of the gear. The top circle refers to the circle where the top of the tooth is located, and the root circle refers to the circle where the bottom of the groove is located. The base circle forms the occurrence line of the involute as a pure rolling circle, and the indexing circle is the reference circle for calculating the geometric dimensions of the gear in the end face.

Nowadays, the manufacturing process of many gear processing plants has been developed to further study the mechanism of gear tooth damage, which is the basis for establishing a reliable strength calculation method, and the theoretical basis for improving the gear carrying capacity and extending the gear life. The development of the gear arc tooth profile as the representative of the new tooth profile; research new gear materials and manufacturing gear new technology; research gear elastic deformation, manufacturing and installation error and temperature field distribution, gear tooth modification, in order to improve the smooth running of the gear, and in full load when the contact area of large gear teeth, so as to improve the bearing capacity of the gear. Friction, lubrication theory and lubrication technology are the basic work in gear research, the study of elastic fluid dynamic pressure lubrication theory, the promotion of the use of synthetic lubricants and the appropriate addition of additives in the oil, not only can improve the bearing capacity of the tooth surface, but also can improve the transmission efficiency.
